The Route from Ulverston

As you leave Ulverston, the trail gently climbs towards views of  distinctive Sir John Barrow Monument on Hoad Hill, offering panoramic views of the town and Morecambe Bay. This monument is a landmark that signifies the start of the walk, and from its peak, the surrounding hills and coastline give you a taste of the landscapes ahead.

From here, the Cumbria Way leads you through rolling farmland, tranquil woodlands, and charming hamlets as you head north. The path meanders through peaceful areas such as Broughton Beck and Gawthwaite, offering a mix of easy walking terrain and the chance to soak in the serenity of the South Lakeland countryside.

Journey into the Heart of the Lake District

As the trail progresses, walkers will journey deeper into the Lake District National Park, passing through quintessential Lakeland scenery—breathtaking valleys, lush green fells, and picturesque rivers. The route takes in some of the region’s most iconic landscapes, such as the Langdale Valley, Borrowdale, and Derwentwater, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains like the Langdale Pikes and Skiddaw.

Each day of the walk offers its own unique charm, from quiet village lanes and stone bridges to rugged paths over ancient fell land. Along the way, walkers have plenty of opportunities to explore traditional Lakeland villages, stop at country inns, and enjoy a variety of wildlife and natural beauty that changes with the seasons.

The Final Stretch

After days of adventure, the Cumbria Way concludes at Carlisle, where the bustling market town provides a perfect ending to the journey. The changing landscapes—from the coastal views near Ulverston to the mountainous heart of the Lake District, and finally, the gentle valleys and plains near Carlisle—create a richly diverse walking experience.
